Good to know
French spelling has its own logic once you learn the patterns β€” many final consonants are silent (bonjour → sounds like "bohn-ZHOOR", not "bohn-ZHOOR-t"), and the letter H is always silent. We'll unpack this properly in the dedicated pronunciation chapter (Chapter 4) β€” for now, just listen and repeat.

πŸ“š tu vs. vous
Formal vs. informal: tu / vous
French has two ways to say "you". Tu is informal (friends, family, other students). Vous is formal (strangers, teachers, anyone older, or more than one person). When in doubt, use vous β€” it's never wrong to be polite. We'll build full sentences with both in Lesson 2.

Reading rule to remember
Most French words keep their final consonant silent (bonjour, salut) β€” but C, R, F, L at the end of a word are usually pronounced. Easy way to remember: the word "CaReFuL" spells out the exceptions.

Read the text below, then check the English gloss if needed
Bonjour ! Je m'appelle Camille. Le matin, je dis "bonjour" à mes voisins. Le soir, je dis "bonsoir". Avec mes amis, je dis "salut" β€” c'est plus simple ! Quand quelqu'un me remercie, je réponds "de rien". Et quand je pars, je dis toujours "au revoir" ou "à bientôt".
English gloss
Hello! My name is Camille. In the morning, I say "bonjour" to my neighbors. In the evening, I say "bonsoir". With my friends, I say "salut" β€” it's simpler! When someone thanks me, I answer "you're welcome". And when I leave, I always say "goodbye" or "see you soon".
